Getting babies to sleep can be a difficult task, especially if they are more energetic than usual. For this reason, several professionals have recommended certain methods to accomplish this complex task. The Oompa Loompa method is one of the most current and, as everything indicates, it can work perfectly.

What is the Oompa Loompa method?

It is normal for a newborn to sleep between 16 and 17 hours a day. This way, generally, for the little ones, it is not difficult to fall asleep. However, this does not happen in all cases.

Within those hours of sleep, there are several times when the child wakes up. Therefore,  your nightly sleep hours are usually interrupted.

As time goes by, the baby begins to have more orderly sleep and, from the 6th week onwards, he begins to sleep for shorter periods during the day. Meanwhile, the night ones are getting longer.

However, it is essential that parents know methods to help the baby sleep. In this sense, the Oompa Loompa method is very attractive and effective.

This method is not very complex, nor does it involve very scientific techniques. It was invented by two parents who, trying to get the baby to sleep, implemented this technique by rocking the baby on their knees. To their surprise, it worked perfectly!

How is the Oompa Loompa method applied?

This technique  has become a very effective tool to use with babies who don’t sleep easily. As we discussed earlier, it’s a pretty simple method. Its inventors emphasized that they saw it for the first time in the movie “The Fantastic Chocolate Factory”.

We will explain this step by step:

  • First,  the baby should be placed on his knees and rocked gently, without making any sudden movements.
  • Then, when the baby is moving, the parent  starts singing “Oompa Loompa, Oompa Loompa”.
  • The little one is kept under the arms, with the thumbs in the armpits, because the rest of the fingers must be placed on the head to avoid damage caused by the movement.
  • Then  a combination of moves from side to side  and then up and down is done.

Does it really work?

The parents, realizing the effectiveness of this technique, decided to upload the video to YouTube. The success was huge: they managed to reach more than 7 million visits since their first publication. Some claim that this technique didn’t work for them and others say it did.

Pediatric neonatologist Adolfo Gómez Papí, author of several books for parents, stated in his Facebook account that “  babies love this method because they are protected and on the move”. Just like when you put them to sleep by cradling them in your lap.”

While  the Oompa Loompa method is accepted by some experts, such as Gómez Papí, others, such as Jodi Mindell, associate director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, are against it.

This professional considers it wrong to do Oompa Loompa every night, as he says that the baby will get used to it and will not sleep in any other way.

The technique is in the movements

It is important to emphasize that  parents must perform very delicate movements and consult their pediatrician before implementing this technique with the child. This is because, although it is a method known and used by many parents, it is important to ensure that they can do it and that the baby will not be harmed.

As noted,  the movements should be smooth and gentle, not forcefully or abruptly. The rationale for this instruction is that babies are in the developmental stage.

On the other hand, it  is important to hold the child’s head properly. Otherwise, there is a risk of causing brain damage, which is known as shaken baby syndrome.

In short, there are many techniques for putting a baby to sleep, most of which are widely approved by experts in the field. The Oompa Loompa method, although controversial, is one of them. However, we should not forget to consult the pediatrician before adopting any new method and having their approval.
